States of Consciousness in Psychology with Definition

In this article, I am going to discuss “States of Consciousness in Psychology with Definition“. Just consciousness cannot cover all of our body awareness. It has some stages in it that takes our mind and body towards consciousness and awareness.

First of all, I will let my readers know that what consciousness is? Consciousness is basically the state of our mind in which person becomes aware of the given surrounding. In consciousness state, a person becomes responsive to the given setting.

Consciousness is basically the awareness of not just outside environment but also awareness in us. In my opinion, awareness with an environment is even more important than awareness in us. Because a person should be known about the surroundings in order to live peacefully.

We have four basic stages of consciousness now I will describe all States of Consciousness in Psychology with Definition one by one.

  1. ALERTNESS:

Alertness is basically the state of sharpness and attentiveness in your mind and brain. It is the very first stage of your consciousness in which your mind is in the completely active state.

It is the state where your mind is completely focused.

This state normally occurs when you are awake. Your all regular and normal daily activities occur when you are awake and this awakened state is actually the state of your alertness.

Alertness is in form of Beta waves that are in between 12-30Hz.

  1. DAYDREAMING:

This is the step where your consciousness level decreases a little bit. This is the state where your mind is not as much alert and focused as in alertness over the given situation.

Daydreaming occurs when you are not in a comfortable position and when you are mentally tired. And you dream of a comfortable and relaxing place.

For further clarification, I would like to give you an example.

“You are attending a lecture in your class and you are like extremely tired, physically and mentally both. So at this moment, you will start daydreaming to come out of that stressing environment”.

IMPORTANT POINT:

Do remember that daydreaming is not thinking. There is a great difference between two of them.
Thinking is just the precise exercise of your mind while daydreaming is just an ambiguous imagination.

Daydreaming is in form of Alpha waves that are in between 8-13Hz.

  1. DROWSINESS:

It is the state where your consciousness level is low. Drowsiness is something that comes naturally. It is something that happens just before falling asleep. It is the state where the person feels sleepy.

It usually occurs before sleeping and after getting up. It is also called as deep meditation. This is another topic of discussion that I will be discussing in upcoming articles for my readers.

Drowsiness is in form of Theta waves and is in between 4-7Hz.

  1. SLEEP:

This is the last ever stage where your consciousness and awareness level finally comes to an end. It is the state where you are just unaware of the world around you.
